The medium’s real job: tempo and map control

Mediums convert mobility into time: you reach key positions first, spot first, and reinforce failing flanks before they collapse. Your damage matters less than your presence — the flank you saved by arriving 30 seconds early is worth more than the 2,000 damage you farmed elsewhere.

The first two minutes

  • Take the vision spot, not the damage spot. First contact decides information for both teams — spot the enemy push without being seen (spotting guide).
  • Secure the crossfire angle. A medium on the flank’s edge makes enemies choose between facing your heavies or you. Crossfire wins positions without losing HP.
  • Do not suicide-scout. Early light trades rarely pay; information + survival scales better.

Mid game: flexing and flanking

  1. Read the minimap every 5–10 seconds. The minimap is the medium’s main weapon: collapsed flank? Rotate before it breaks, not after.
  2. Flank through cover, not across fields. The long way around is shorter than the respawn.
  3. Shoot what your team is shooting. Focus fire deletes tanks; scattered damage does not. Track targets so your heavies get free shots.
  4. Claim the damage role your team lacks: if TDs hold the back line, mediums become the second-line DPM; if heavies stall, mediums flank.

Late game: the cleanup

With few tanks left, mediums become assassins: use vision and speed to isolate enemies, take 1v1 trades your armor wins (armor mechanics), and never trade HP evenly — your mobility lets you choose fights, so choose unfair ones.

Positioning rules that win maps

  • Play ridgelines: gun depression + turret armor is the medium’s castle (STB-1, Centurion styles).
  • Double-bush second line: unspotted damage is the safest damage; fire and relocate.
  • Never hold a corner alone against heavies — delay, spot, call for help, fall back through cover.
  • Control the middle when possible: central positions flex to both flanks and cut rotations.

Setup and grind

Stabilizer is non-negotiable (mediums fire on the move), then rammer and vents or optics (equipment guide). Crew: view range and gun handling first (crew guide). The Soviet Object 140 and Japanese STB-1 lines are ideal classrooms (best lines guide).

Master the medium and you will find yourself influencing every battle — quietly, from the right place, at the right moment.
