Command Legendary Tanks in Epic 15-vs-15 Battles
World of Tanks is a free online game where teams of armored vehicles clash across historic battlefields. This independent guide shows you what to expect and how to get rolling.
Free to download and play. Optional in-game purchases. Recommended age 16+.
What is World of Tanks?
World of Tanks is a team-based online game built around 20th-century armored warfare. Two teams of fifteen players each take historically inspired tanks into battle, using terrain, teamwork and tactics to outmaneuver the enemy and capture objectives.
Rather than twitch shooting, the game rewards positioning, map knowledge and patience: where you point your armor, when you expose yourself to fire, and how you support your team often matter more than raw reflexes.
The game is free to download and play. You progress through national tech trees — the USSR, Germany, the USA, France, the UK, Japan, China and more — researching and unlocking new vehicles as you go. Optional purchases exist but are not required to play and enjoy the game.

Beginner Tips
- Stay near teammates early on — lone tanks are easy targets.
- Use cover and angle your armor so shots bounce off instead of penetrating.
- Watch the minimap constantly; it tells you where the danger is.
- Don't rush. Let aggressive enemies expose themselves first.
- Learn each tank's weak spots so you know where to aim.
- Stick to one or two tech-tree lines at first instead of spreading thin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is World of Tanks really free?
Yes. The game is free to download and play. There are optional in-game purchases (such as a premium account or premium vehicles), but they are not required to play and progress.

What age is it suitable for?
It is rated PEGI 16 / ESRB Teen for non-realistic violence. Please follow the age guidance for your region.
